Šibenik
The oldest self-emerging Croatian city on the Adriatic, it is located in the most protected natural harbor, on the central part of the Croatian Adriatic coast, in the picturesque, divided bay into which the Krka flows, one of the most beautiful karst rivers in Croatia. With more than 40 000 inhabitants, Šibenik today is the capital city and cultural, educational, administrative and economic centre of Šibenik-Knin County.
In the old part of the city, that surrounds the Cathedral, the houses are of stone and compacted while the streets are narrow and winding with numerous steps and vaulted passageways. Small squares and numerous cultural-historic monuments (the Central City Square, the City Hall, the Prince’s Palace), four forts (St. Nicholas, St. Michael, Šubićevac and St. John) that surround the city, are testament to the rich past of this city.
Šibenik is adorned with well-known national parks that are close by: NP Krka – is Croatia’s seventh national park, with its seven travertine waterfalls. Krka is a natural and karst phenomenon; NP Kornati – consists of a separate and, by many things, known group of islands called Kornati. The tourist offerings in the city of Šibenik provide excursions to farm homesteads in conjunction with rural tourism; the Falconing centre - the only centre in which various types of predatory birds can be seen; Bungee jumping from the Šibenik bridge; diving, sailing, paintball, hiking, cycling…
A rich gastronomic selection offers all traditional specialties of Dalmatia: crab and mussel stews, stewed vegetables, meat or seafood risottos, bean stews, superb fish or meat soups and the unavoidable chard as a universal side dish to almost all foods. Traditional deserts that can be found in the Šibenik kitchen include rožata (a sort of crème brulee), fritule (fritters) and kroštule (deep fried dough).
The city of Šibenik has another name – the City of Children, because for over 50 years in a row it has been the host of a children’s event in Croatia that has an international character, the International Children’s Festival, for which it is known worldwide.
